Tallahassee became the capital of Florida in 1824, soon after Florida was accepted as a U.S. territory. The people of Florida could not come to an agreement regarding the capital location, since both St. Augustine and Pensacola had served as capital cities in the years prior, so they compromised by choosing a geographically neutral site: Tallahassee.

     As the photos above clearly show, the city of Tallahassee, FL has changed drastically, even in just the last 60 years. The addition of the 22-story captial building in 1977 was not the only development made in this ever-growing city: being the capital of the state made Tallahassee a popular place for civil rights demonstrations, discussions, and change.
