St. Augustine, FL

St. Augustine, Florida is located about 40 miles south of Jacksonville, Florida and is most widely known for being the oldest city in North America. The city was founded by Spanish explorers in 1565, centered around the Castillo de San Marco (a military fort, which has become one of the city's major tourist attractions). However, despite the fame that the city has gained from being the oldest North American city, many people do not realize how many other noteworthy events St. Augustine has participated in throughout our nation's history. For example, the civil rights demonstrations that took place in St. Augustine sparked the civil rights movement within the state of Florida. Visitors to the city can learn about many of these demonstrations and events by simply walking around the city.
