How Florida Impacted the Civil Rights Movement
Conflict at St. Augustine Beach

On June 22, 1964, Civil Rights demonstrators held a Wade In at St. Augustine Beach, which was a "whites only" beach at the time. Watch the videos below to see what happened with the crowd of white individuals attacked the demonstrators in the ocean.
These days everyone is welcome to enjoy the sand and the ocean at St. Augustine Beach (or "The Pier" as many locals call it). Often times, if the sun is out, you can find a variety of people from different places and backgrounds sharing the beach for some fun in the sun.
